Construction on the Capitol Complex of Puerto Rico, which includes the Medical Arts Building, began in 1925 in the neighborhood now known as “Old San Juan”.

Conservation Solutions, Inc. (CSI) was contracted in 2000 by the government of Puerto Rico to perform a condition survey and preliminary conservation study of the building envelope of the Medical Arts Building. CSI collaborated with an international team of conservators and other experts in their respective fields on the survey project.

The conservation study included an analysis of materials, systems, and conditions as well as a photographic condition inventory and recommendations for the conservation, stabilization, and rehabilitation of the building envelope.

In addition, the survey included recommendations for the emergency stabilization of the building façade; concrete and stucco repairs; the repair and replacement of decorative cast stone elements; replacement of failed ceramic roofing tiles; replacement of severely corroded steel casement windows; historic paint analysis; and the removal and reapplication of historic finishes. The entire project required only two separate site visits and was completed within two months.
