Fort Belvoir Historic Buildings

Fairfax County, VA
Fort Belvoir is a major military post located in Fairfax County, Virginia. The site takes its name from the historic 18th-century “Belvoir Manor,” the elegant plantation residence of William Fairfax, the ruins of which remain on the grounds of the fort today. The Fort today is a sprawling campus of meticulous Georgian Colonial Revival brick buildings, constructed primarily during a national rebuilding campaign executed in the 1930s to replace earlier, temporary Army structures. The buildings range from modest utilitarian structures, such as a former post office, to the grand and elegant headquarters of the entire post. The red brick-clad structures are enlivened with a variety of architectural elements including wood trim, limestone porticos, decorative iron grilles, cast stone trim and significant historic cannons.
In 2009, Conservation Solutions, Inc. (CSI) was contracted to act as conservation consultant for the exterior restoration of six high-priority buildings, a design-build project. As part of the design phase, CSI performed a thorough condition assessment and photo-documentation of each building, including brick, wood, stone, concrete, copper and iron elements. Based on this survey, CSI prepared contract drawings and specifications for the exterior restoration scope. CSI collaborated with the Fort’s cultural resources manager to review submittals, samples, and mock-ups as needed.
