Treated at the CSI Studio in Mooresville, North Carolina for a Traveling Exhibit

Conservation Solutions, Inc. (CSI) works closely with Premier Exhibitions, Inc., the salvor-in-possession of the R.M.S. Titanic, to preserve the collection of nearly 5,500 artifacts recovered from the wreck-site. CSI provides conservation treatment of objects, as well as design and fabrication of display mounts.

Artifacts that present some of the greatest challenges for conservation and display are the ship’s fittings, which can be very large with many intricate parts and composed of multiple materials. The Officers Quarters Window is a 44-inch tall, 250 pound bronze frame window. This window retains original paint and glass. The upper transom window pivots up, while the lower window opens out to lock against the side of the ship. CSI received the window for final conservation treatment after desalinization was completed. The goals of the treatment were: to clean and stabilize the surfaces of the bronze, glass and paint; remove remaining loose corrosion product; fabricate and install new hinge pins for the lower window; apply a protective lacquer coating to the bronze; and design and fabricate a travel and display mount.

Once the conservation of the window was complete, the travel and display mount was designed in two parts. A steel frame supports the window for travel in a horizontal position. Existing bolt holes in the window frame were utilized to secure it to the display frame in three locations, while cradling the lower window with two supports. The post of the display frame slides into a separate base for vertical display of the window. Exhibit installers are never required to handle the window’s surface directly.
