Facilities
CSI has offices in Santa Fe, New Mexico and District Heights, Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC. Conservators work from both locations while administration is handled in New Mexico. The Maryland site includes climate controlled bench conservation studios, a laboratory and a 4000-square-foot workshop that has been designed to accommodate large-scale conservation projects. The studio is housed in a secure masonry structure that has two loading docks, 10-ton and 2-ton overhead cranes,16-foot-high ceilings, and a 400-square-foot secured, outdoor workspace.
The studio also houses an 800-square-foot testing laboratory with the analytical equipment needed to characterize and evaluate a broad range of historic and artistic materials. Specialized testing and treatment equipment include: ultrasonic cleaning chambers, a desiccation chamber, stereographic and petrographic microscopes, a fiberscope, and a large array laboratory of analytical testing instruments, equipment, and supplies to identify original materials, diagnose material-specific problems, and formulate appropriate conservation treatments.
Much of our work is on large scale objects and occurs off-site at their locations. We have a substantial inventory of portable equipment capable of providing all necessary treatment tools wherever the project is located.
